Pro-Anorexia Outlawed in France
The law in France has been around since spring. It has been a topic of hot debate. I would love to hear your thoughts, as there are many sides to this issue.
Here is the background: French lawmakers passed a bill making it illegal for anyone to promote “extreme thinness.” The law is aimed at pro-anorexia web sites, but includes fashion magazines, blogs, and advertisements. Under the proposed law, judges would be able to imprison individuals for up to three years or fine those violating the law up to 45,000 euros if found guilty.

France’s legislations has stirred up heated debate, with even eating disorder professionals expressing mixed feelings. Some think this is a pioneering move to unrealistic beauty ideals in the media. Others think this will make the general public more aware of pro-anorexia sites and believe it is a unrealistic law and difficult to enforce. Some even think it is a violation of human rights.
What do you think? Will restricting images of thinness ideals improve body image for women and men? Or does the problem run deeper?
