Recent Data about EDs and Hospitalization

Acording to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality:

-The number of men and women hospitalized due to eating disorders rose 18 percent between 1999 and 2006

-Hospitalizations for eating disorders rose most for children under 12 years of age – 119 percent. The second steepest rise was for patients ages 45 to 64 – 48 percent.

Hospitalizations for men also increased 37 percent – but women continued to dominate hospitalizations for eating disorders (89 percent in 2006).

These numbers continue to show that eating disorders are serious mental illnesses with profound physical complications. Adequate treatment and care is necessary. If left untreated, eating disorders can be fatal. Early intervention can improve treatment outcome.
