Re-Claiming You
08.23.10
Often, eating disorders develop as a protection or preservation of self. We are given many messages about who we should be, what we should do, and of course how we should look. However, in the face of so many messages and ideas we are rarely provided with guidelines regarding HOW to assert ourselves, communicate or act in an authentic way. There is no room or space to really develop who we are. When faced with such confusion, people often grasp for a way to hold on and cope with all they have. This is when eating disorders can develop.
An important part of breaking the tie binding you to your eating disorder is re-claiming YOU and letting go of who you think you SHOULD be. This can feel like a pretty tough journey in the beginning, but one that can be navigated with a little time and compassion.
Begin by spending some time with yourself. Be still. Be aware of how you feel, listen to your body (i.e. your breathing, physical sensations). Let your thoughts float freely without censoring them. Begin to be aware of the things you like. Ask yourself questions. What do I like? What don’t I enjoy? Why? What would I LIKE to do? Be open and nonjudgmental. Let your own self be your own guide. Write, journal, read, do the thing that feels right.
Step by step you will find your identity again. You have been there along, you can find yourself again and re-claim the life you deserve.
