Finding HOPE in Eating Disorder Recovery

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today”. Thich Nhat Hanh

An eating disorder is an illness that can feel confusing and consuming. It involves terrible suffering. When you are in the midst of the eating disorder’s pain it can be very hard to believe there is another path, much less one that is possible. Often times life beyond an eating disorder feels impossible to imagine even if it is desired.

Hope can be an important ingredient to get you through the times when you feel very stuck. Here are some thoughts to help you find a way to harness hope and keep moving (even if you aren’t always headed in the direction you desire, keep moving toward that place!)

  • Full recovery from an eating disorder is possible!
  • Having hope is related to other positive feelings that can improve your mood and how you see things.
  • Hope increases your ability to stay in treatment and benefit from it.
  • Experiencing hope allows us to feel more gratitude and experience greater understanding and forgiveness toward ourselves and others.
  • Connection facilitates hope. What are ways you can enhance connection? Friends, treatment team, spirituality, enjoyed activities, these are all outlets and relationships that help us feel connected.
